I began working as a mental health counselor in 2005 at Lane Community college upon completion of my Master's degree in Counseling Psychology at Oregon State University. For 2 years after Graduate school I also volunteered with the mental health clinic at White Bird in Eugene. In 2012 I opened my own private practice.
In my practice, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) frequently. CBT is a form of therapy that focuses on examining the relationships between thoughts, feelings and behaviors as treatment for whatever issues my clients bring to get help with.
Mindfulness is another type of therapy that can help with anxiety, depression, grief and loss, life transition and relationship/communication issues. It is a life skill that can be taught, learned and practiced.
I am a big believer in play. Whether you have children or not, generally, adults do not put time aside to play. Play can include anything from outdoor time to sport (individual or team) to art to creating intentional time to relax and "just be". Most of us live very busy lives but spend very little time being present in the moment. We avoid or don't prioritize this for many reasons. Poor time management, anxiety, depression, low self esteem and "monkey brain" can all get in the way of a higher quality life.
